A bottle of coconut oil has been a staple in my cupboard lately, especially with its numerous health benefits. Most take it as a nutritional supplement while some add it to salad dressings or smoothies. Coconut oil’s numerous health benefits include improving blood cholesterol levels and lowering the risk of heart disease. Celebrities such as Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Aniston, and Kim Kardashian swear by it. Supermodel Gisele Bundchen’s organic skin care line, Sejaa, has coconut oil as the main ingredient.
Aside from taking it internally, did you know that coconut oil also has a lot of uses in the world of beauty? We are lucky to live in a country that has abundance of coconut trees, as we can get good-quality, locally-made coconut oil all year long.
1. Tanning oil
Instead of expensive tanning oils, take a bottle of coconut oil to your next beach trip and slather it on you as you work on your beach goddess glow. According to Authority Nutrition, coconut oil makes an effective sunscreen, blocking about 20% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. I personally would spray on a lightweight sunscreen on top of the coconut oil, just to be sure I get extra-protection.
A beauty trick I learned from moms and lolas is to rub coconut oil on the scalp and hair. Like a hot oil treatment, it restores dry, brittle, and damaged hair. Coconut oil also has antifungal properties that help get rid of dandruff. Those with sensitive scalp would find this a better alternative to commercially-bought hair treatments since coconut oil is free from harsh chemicals and sulfates, which may irritate the scalp. You can also use coconut oil as an overnight treatment or frizz tamer. Tip: When using it to tame frizz, use sparingly to avoid excess oiliness in the hair.
3. Eye cream
When I run out of my favorite eye cream, I dab a bit of coconut oil on the delicate skin around my eyes.
4. Lash treatment
I use coconut oil as a conditioner for my lashes, which can get too dry from wearing mascara all the time.
Oil pulling helps improve your overall dental health. Gargling coconut oil in the morning can help whiten teeth and freshen breath. The lauric acid found in extra virgin coconut oil is an anti-microbial agent, which aids in killing the germs found in the mouth. Just put a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil in the mouth, swish it around for 20 seconds, and then spit it out and brush your teeth. The oily feeling takes a while to get used to.
6. Lip balm
Got dry lips? No problem! Dab a tiny bit of coconut oil on your lips. It gives a nice gloss to it (without looking like you ate an entire plate of lechon) and it tastes super yummy, so go ahead and pucker up with your honey.
7. Overnight skin moisturizer
I use coconut oil as my moisturizer at night. My skin tends to get dry and chafed, so I need to give my skin some TLC at night using a bit of coconut oil. Since I find oil a bit too heavy for me, I concentrate on problem areas such as elbows, knees, heels, balls of my feet, palms, and cuticles. For the rest of my skin, I apply just enough to give it a nice sheen. I also use coconut oil to remove any grip aid residue from my skin after a pole dance class.
8. Eye makeup remover
Get rid of stubborn eye makeup with a bit of coconut oil. The makeup will melt away with no need to tug, giving the delicate skin around your eyes some TLC.
With so many uses from head-to-toe, this wonder oil is not only a superfood for the health buffs, but also a super beauty tool. What other uses do you have for coconut oil, Bellas? Share your tips and techniques below!
