Yoga for me is more than just a workout to get flat abs and toned muscles from all the arm balances and core work. Yoga is a healing practice that not only helps you stay fit, but also keeps your bodily functions and energy channels balanced. Of course those who have tried yoga in a studio may agree that it’s not all chants and meditation, but also a form of exercise. Although we may look like we’re just stretching and all flow-y, our muscles are actually working. Through breathing, our bodies generate heat, hence the sweat.

Whether it’s a dynamic yoga practice such as Ashtanga and Vinyasa, or a meditative practice such as Yin, yoga for me is the perfect balance to an otherwise very active lifestyle. Although I am a yoga teacher, I am also a makeup artist, and that part of me often shows up in class when I attend in quirky leggings or curled hair. Yes, there is an inner kikay in us yoginis! See how I enhance my yoga glow with these essentials:

1. Hair ties
If hair on your face interferes with your drishti during balancing poses, tie it back in a ponytail or bun. Bangs can sometimes get distracting, so use a headband to keep it away from the face. Invest in non-slip hair ties that won’t snap easily and will keep hair neatly in place even when you jump back to chaturanga. Try: Goody Stay Put Elastic with Slide-proof hold, P249.75 for 4 pieces, and Artbox telephone cord hair ties, P20.

2. A pretty yoga towel
Yoga towels add extra cushioning and absorb sweat—perfect for those whose hands and feet sweat easily. Pretty colored mats can brighten your mood as well. Equanimity Manila’s yoga towels, P990 each, come in bright colors to match each yogi’s personality. They’re non-slip, so there’s an extra grip when you’re doing your arm balances.

3. All-purpose spray sanitizers
It’s a good practice to sanitize your yoga mat or hammock before and after class. I use a spray sanitizer that I can use for the mat and my hands and feet. Choose a scent that’s gentle instead of super strong and overpowering. Best if it’s organic and locally made! Try: Messy Bessy Hand Sanitizer, P70.

4. Hair products that save time and hair
I have really long and thick hair, so drying my it takes a lot of time and effort. I discovered the awesome product that is My Amazing Blow Dry Shake ‘N’ Spray, P1,250, a year ago. It helps me cut my drying time in half and protects my hair from heat damage. My hair looks like I slaved over it for an hour or more.

5. Air purifiers
If you take your yoga off the mat and into your home, use air purifiers to eliminate dust particles, dirt, and dander from the air and fill it with a gentle, clean scent of your choice. It’s great for home practice or for just relaxing at home. Water-based oil scents like bamboo, lavander, lemongrass, white tea, and ginger can be soothing to the senses and can create that spa-like experience.

6. Healing creams and salves
Like icing to a cake, Yoga Love Healing Cream, P490, makes the perfect ending to a yoga session. Yoga teachers sometimes give students a mini-head massage during pentacle or Savasana to help them relax. They also rub the cream at certain Chakra points to help with the practice and let students “relax and let go” and breathe. Off the mat, they can be used as pain and muscle relievers that smell super wonderful.

7. Yoga-proof makeup
Because I am a kikay yogini, there’s that part of me that still wants to look pretty even if I’m sweaty. I let the practice take care of my skin (like the yoga glow that yoginis emit) and just define my brows, put on eyeliner and/or mascara, and add a pop of color on my lips with formulas that stay on from Surya Namaskar to Savasana. Products I personally use: Happy Skin Eye Am Here To Stay, P499, Eye of Horus Pencil Goddess Pencil, P990, Covergirl Lipperfection Lipstick in Tempt, P395, and MAC Ruby Woo, P1,000.
